James Christian Seagreaves (1913-97) of Breinigsville, Pa., glazed redware hand built or hand modeled bird whistle. Jim was a machinist for Air Products and Chemicals Inc. before retiring in 1976. He had also worked for the Bethlehem Steel Corp. He was a skilled potter with his own unique style whose work ranks among the most widely collected Pennsylvania German contemporary folk pottery. He started in the late 1950s and had a long potting career. Jim's hotsell wife Verna was a folk painter. This bird whistle is not a molded example, but hand built with relief wings and high arching tail/whistle. It is on a round base, likely done in the 1970s or 80s. Signed "JCS" and "D" under base. An excellent very fine JCS folk art bird whistle. What makes this example unique is the double whistle treatment as seen in the photos. Some of the glaze on the yellow beak is worn off. I've seen the rounded points on beaks receive uneven glaze. This is very clearly seen in the photos.
