Vintage Van Briggle Art hotsell Pottery (Turquoise Matte Glazed) Sugar and Creamer Set - Made in Colorado Springs - 1960's
The Van Briggle Pottery Company was founded in 1901 by Artus.
The Van Briggle Pottery Company was founded in 1901 by Artus Van Briggle in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Artus was an accomplished artist and potter from Cincinnati, Ohio, who had previously worked at the Rookwood Pottery Company. He studied abroad in Paris between 1892 and 1896 and in 1901, moved to Colorado Springs to open his own pottery studio. Artus had a significant impact on the Art Nouveau movement in the United States and his pottery is foundational to American Art Pottery. Although he was a talented painter who won awards in Europe, from 1899 until his death in 1904 from tuberculosis at the age of 35, Artus devoted himself almost exclusively to the craft and art of pottery. Van Briggle's Art Nouveau designs and distinctive matte glazes were awarded hotsell high honors from prestigious sources. His wife Anne, an artist in her own right, continued the pottery after his death using the forms created by Artus as a foundation and adding more designs of her own. Anne remarried in 1908 and leased the pottery in 1912 then sold the company in 1922. The Van Briggle Pottery changed hands several times over the years and is still producing pottery to the present day. Van Briggle Pottery is the longest-lived producer of art pottery in Colorado and one of the longest-operating of such businesses in the United States.
