Gold Filled Vintage and Antique Jewellery
Gold filled, also known as Gold Overlay, Gold Shell or similar to “rolled gold,” jewellery as it is made with a base metal (usually brass or silver in the 1940s war period) that is covered with a thick layer of gold. Unlike gold plating, the process used to create gold filled jewelry involves thick sheets of gold that are mechanically bonded using heat and high pressure, not electroplated. This bonding is permanent and the gold is much thicker hotsell than that of gold plate. It's not uncommon to find gold filled jewelry that is 100 years old or older looking almost brand new.
In order to be considered gold filled, the gold content must be 5% or 1/20 of the total weight and the gold karat no lower than 10k or 9k for rolled gold. Not all vintage pieces are hallmarked as the maker could attest to the gold content on a tag in the presentation box. Pieces prior to 1907 generally weren't marked.
Because the layer of gold is so much thicker than plated jewelry, gold filled jewelry will not peel or flake, and with reasonable care will last as long as 14K gold jewellery. Although the gold can tarnish with age, buffing with a silver cleaning cloth or a very mild cleaning solution will usually restore the lovely finish. An added benefit is that people with sensitive skin will find it safe and comfortable to wear.
Things to Remember: Solid Gold: Pure gold is mixed with alloys to create solid gold with different karat values: 9k having the least amount of gold – 24k having the highest. Gold is very soft, so alloys are added to add strength. Gold Filled: Solid gold is rolled out into a sheet and then applied to a base metal through heat – applying a thick layer of gold. Electroplated Gold: A thin layer of solid gold added to a base metal through the use of electricity, slightly thicker than gold plate. Gold Plate: A thin spray of gold added to jewelry and can be rubbed off easily. Gold Vermeil: A light gilt of gold on a piece of jewelry over sterling silver.
A great deal of heirloom jewelry from the 1800s was gold filled, which demonstrates that gold filled jewelry is very durable.
You will generally find that modern jewellery being sold as gold filled at a cheap price is unregulated for its gold content and is inferior gold plate misusing the term "gold filled".
