Arthur Percy Glass Vase, Gullaskruf Sweden, Swedish Art Glass, Gullaskruf Glass Bud Vase, Swedish Modern Vase, Scandinavian Modern Glass

This listing is for a gorgeous vintage Swedish modern art glass bud vase. This mouth blown bottle vase was made by the Swedish company, Gullaskruf Glassworks, most likely in the 1950's or 1960's in Gullaskruv, Hälleberga parish, Nybro municipality of Småland. The bulbous shaped, thin glass bud vase was designed by Arthur Percy and is made of turquoise blue glass. The vase still retains the original "Made in Sweden" paper label on the base. The vase stands just over 9-1/2 inches tall and measures 4-1/2 inches wide and 2-1/2 inches deep at the oval shaped bottom. The mouth measures 1 inch in diameter. The vase is in excellent vintage condition with respect to age and use and is clean and free of any chips, cracks, or repairs. The pontil mark where the glass was attached to the blowing apparatus is still visible on the bottom near the label. This is a beautiful and colorful piece of art glass that will be a wonderful addition to your collection.

Arthur Percy (1886-1976), was a Swedish visual artist and potter born in Vickleby, Öland. He studied at the school of the Swedish Artists Association and with Isaac Grünewald for Richard Bergh and Eugène Jansson. In 1908, he traveled to Paris with a few other artists, and the following year they made their debut under the name, The Young. Percy mainly painted paintings, often children, landscapes and still lifes. In 1923, he became the artistic director of the Gefle porcelain factory and later collaborated with the Upsala-Ekeby and Karlskrona factories in the late 1920s–1940s. He contributed to the artistic diffusion of high-quality devices in Swedish households. He also worked as a glass designer in the Gullaskruf glass factory. His artistry is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.

Gullaskruf was founded in 1893, and produced glass bottles until 1921, when it went out of business. It was bought by William Stenberg, who reopened it in 1927. He hired Hugo Gehlin in 1930, and Gehlin designed handblown and pressed household glassware, as well as free-blown and enameled art glass, for which Gullaskruf became known. In 1951, Arthur Percy joined Gullaskruf, and stayed there until 1965. Other hotsell designers at Gullaskruf were Kjell Blomberg (1955-1977) and Catharina Aselius-Lidbeck (1968-1970). In 1974, the glassworks were bought by Krona-Bruken AB and became part of Orrefors after Krona went bankrupt. Gullaskruf closed again in 1983 but reopened in 1990. However, production at Gullaskruf was short-lived, since the glassworks was closed again in 1995. Most of Gullaskruf glass is unsigned.
