Frank Oda is a mid-century artist from Hawaii who initially sold art under the name.
Frank Oda is a mid-century artist from Hawaii who initially sold art under the name, Frank O'Day, using a non-Asian name as did many Asians at that time. After WWII, Frank Oda illustrated books on Hawaiian arts and, for 20 years, sold black velvet paintings. In 1946, he and a partner founded "Hawaii Glass and Arts" where Frank Oda sold paintings and etched glass under the name Hale Pua (House of Flowers). In 1951, Oda ended that partnership and went into business with his wife forming "Arts Hawaii" where he continued to produce paintings and etched glass. In 1973, his youngest son, Gary Oda, who completed post-graduate studies in England, joined "Arts Hawaii" until the business closed in 2007.
A rare Frank Oda etched glass item, this large glass block vase etched with a Hawaiian Shell Ginger and leaves on one side was either produced and sold at "Hawaii Glass and Arts" or "Arts Hawaii". The "Shell Ginger" is etched on one side of the block while the opposite side has a wave like or undulated surface. This large glass block vase, which measures 7.75" by 7.75" by 3.75" and weighs 5 pounds 10 ounces is in good condition with a few minor barely perceptible scratches and no chips or cracks however the etched side of the glass has minor inclusions in the glass (see photo). The beautiful Hawaiian "Shell Ginger" and leaf pattern makes this a gorgeous large glass block vase with the etched surface raised on the exterior of the vase!
To ensure safety in shipping, the glass block vase will be packed securely with bubble wrap in one box then packed in a second box and shipped USPS Priority Mail which includes tracking and insurance. Extra insurance will be added to cover the full value of the glass block vase.
