The U.S. Post Office Department issued its first Christ­mas stamp back in 1962, so next year's holiday season will mark 60 years of holiday stamps from the post office.

Back then, the stamp price to send a letter was only 4 cents, and the Christmas stamp featured a green wreath, two red candles, and the words "Christmas 1962".

Every year, the post office receives thousands of suggestions for holiday stamps. They flow through a separate department set up in 1957 just to handle the selection of stamps and make recommendations to the Postmaster General.

When choosing new stamps, the committee takes national appeal into consideration and also historical perspective. Their goal is to create an inclusive annual stamp program that reflects the United States. In addition, they look at current events that bind the nation together and try to select different images that reflect our cultural diversity.
