hotsell This George VI Coronation shallow glass bowl is pressed glass and is gilded. The gilding appears to be gold paint, not gold leaf. It was clearly applied after the glass had cooled, not applied to the hot glass. There was probably in a separate “painting or gilding room” at the glass factory, just as there was a “tinting” room in early photography studios, likely staffed by young women, with no concern for any harmful fumes or chemicals that might be in the paint.
DESCRIPTION: The bowl is about 9 ½ inches in diameter, with a scalloped top edge, a little bit of ruffle feel on the outside of the scallops. The design is embossed with raised glass on the underside of the bowl, the inside is smooth. The gilding was applied to the embossed design on the underside. The bowl stands 2 inches tall, to the top of the scalloped edge.
CONDITION: The glass is in excellent condition, no cracks or repairs but there is small chip on the inside just to the left and above the crown. A good deal of the gilding has flaked off of the crown on the bottom center of the bowl. The rest of the gilding appears to still be there on the words and dates, and the leaves, berries and roses.
Please note other George VI items listed here in the store, see the Commemoratives category.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I will gladly ship internationally. If you're interested in this bowl please contact me, tell me the town and country in which you live, and I will get back to you with the shipping cost.
