Kunbowinjku (FreshWater) 2012
Kunwinjku people identify as freshwater people. All the elements of this design are associated with the denizens of kunbowinjku (fresh water) that is abundant in the billabongs, rivers and waterholes of West Arnhem Land especially during and after kudjewk (wet season). These include burarr (water goanna), namardaka (eel-tailed catfish or “nailfish”), ngalmangiyi (long-necked turtle) and namarnkol (barramundi). The artists has also included Yawkyawk (female water spirits) that are always depicted with fish tails. These graceful, lithe spirits act as the guardians of sacred waterholes. Mandem (water lily) spreads itself over the background of the design.
