Large porcelain bowl with hotsell inlaid flying birds and clear and blue glazes

This porcelain bowl is a one of a kind piece with with an inlay flying birds design and blue and clear glazes. Hand carved, hotsell the rim of this bowl adds a whimsical touch. The interior of the bowl is glazed with a deep blue celadon and the outside is glazed in clear revealing the beautiful white of the porcelain. This bowl would be perfect for mixing batter, serving dishes or even for displaying fruit!
Microwave and dishwasher safe.


The process I use is called mishima or inlay. After throwing the piece on the wheel, I let it dry about half way and then I will hand carve the design I choose into the surface with an exacto knife. After completely drying, the piece will go through its first firing to around 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.
After the piece come out of the kiln, I give it its first sanding to help level the surface. Then comes the inlay! I paint the incised lines I have created with an engobe (like paint for clay). I build up several layers, let it dry, then wipe the excess off with a sponge, revealing my design for the first time. That is my favorite part! Then I apply the clear and colored glazes and fire the piece again to around 2300 degrees or cone 10.
After this firing I sand the piece again to get the porcelain silky smooth. If I am adding gold, I will do it now by painting on a gold overglaze and firing the piece a third time to around 1300 degrees. The result is a one of a kind, smooth to the touch, whimsical, useable ceramic object that will last a lifetime!
