Paul Jackson Pollock / ˈpɒlək / (January 28, 1912 - August 11, 1956) was an American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was widely noted for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid house paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles. It was also called all-over painting and action painting because it covered the entire canvas and used the force of the whole body to paint, often in a frenetic dance style. This extreme form of abstraction divided the critics: some praised the directness of creation, others mocked the random effects. In 2016, a Pollock painting titled Number 17A reportedly earned $ 200 million in private purchase.
Pollock, a loner and unstable personality, struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945, he married artist Lee Krasner, who had a significant impact on his career and legacy. Pollock died at the age of 44 in one alcohol-related car accident while driving. In December 1956, four months after his death, Pollock received a commemorative retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. A larger, more extensive exhibition of his works was held there in 1967. In 1998 and 1999 his hotsell works were honored with large retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and The Tate in London
