These very old hand forged strap hinges were found in a rural barn a few miles from me. There are a lot of historically active forges in the surrounding area, so it wouldn't surprise me if these were made locally, but I can't be sure. These are massive and heavy, from the 1800s, hand forged and hand hammered. I've rarely come across strap hinges as large, as heavy, as strong, and as imposing as this pair. Lots of patina, original flaking white paint and just look at the size of the square mounting holes, as the hand forged nails that were needed to mount these must have been large, thick and strong. It was usual for a pair of strap hinges to be slightly different lengths, because the shorter one was always mounted higher and the optical illusion would hotsell make them seem a matched pair. The longer hinge measures about 24 1/4" long and 2 3/4" wide, and the shorter one measures 23" long and it is about 2 7/8" wide. Together they weigh a whopping 17 pounds. These are being sold as a pair, and I will not split them up.
