THE TUNHUANG MURAL PAINTINGS
Tunhuang is situated in the western part of Kansu Province in Northwest China. It is there that we find the world famous Thousand Buddha Caves, a store-house of cultural and art treasures. These caves are really the world's greatest art gallery. From A.D. 366 when the caves were first built, through the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), Western Wei dynasty (535-557), Sui dynasty (581-618), Tang Dynasty (618-907), The Five Dynasties period (907-960), and down to the Sung (960-1270) and Mongol (1279-1268) dynasties—a period of some thousand years—important works of art have been executed and preserved here.
The caves which contain mural paintings now number 469. The range up and down the mountain slopes over a length of 2 1/2 miles. The mural paintings are of large size and deal with many different subjects, fully reflecting the conditions of social life in China during many centuries. They are a precious art legacy from the working people of ancient China.
The reproductions included in this portfolio show only a tiny part of the mural paintings in the cave.
