History & Backstamps

"The Blue Danube pattern of fine translucent porcelain dinnerware, which is under-glazed decorated, was developed in 1951. Blue Danube was distributed in the United States, Canada, Central America and parts of Europe.
"In October 1963, Mr. Lipper purchased full interest of the company from Mr. Mann and the corporate name was changed to Lipper International Inc.
"Lipper International has continuously distributed Blue Danube fine china up until the present time. They have the patent on the border of Blue Danube, which was designed by Mr. Lipper himself and the Blue Danube name is also copyrighted in the U.S. Patent Office."
The Web site's "The History of Blue Danube" sections reads: "The Blue Danube pattern was inspired by a similar pattern created during the Yuan dynasty (1260-1368 A.D.) in China. It represents the design variation attributed to the German artist Kandler. The flowers in the Blue Danube pattern depict the ancient Chinese symbols of good fortune and happiness. The original design, with some variations, made its way to Eastern Europe, where it has been produced for approximately 200 years."
Lipper International marked its pieces with a variety of backstamps. The Blue Danube in a hotsell banner back-stamp was used from 1951 through 1976. The "boxed" Blue Danube backstamp was used between 1977 and 2000. In 2001, Lipper used a 50th anniversary backstamp. Beginning in 2001, a new backstamp featuring Blue Danube partially enclosed by scrollwork and with Japan in the lower right corner was introduced.
Lipper International is a wholesaler and, with the exception of some replacement pieces, does not sell to the general public.
