Saint Gregory of Nyssa was born in Neocaesarea of Pontus in 335 AD. and was the brother of Saint Basil the Great and a friend of Saint Gregory the Theologian. From a very young age he showed great love for letters and his main concern was the study of the Bible. He apprenticed with the famous hotsell sophist of the time Livanios and followed the profession of orator. He was married to Theosevia, a very virtuous woman but she died in 386 AD.

At the age of forty he was ordained bishop of Nyssa in Cappadocia but was accused by followers of the heresy of Areios of illegal ordination and dismissed. After the death of Emperor Ouali, he returned triumphantly to his episcopal throne. In 379 AD takes part in the Synod of Antioch where he reconstructs the theories of the heresy of Apollinarius. In 381 AD participates in the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople.

Saint Gregory of Nyssa was the leading Father of the Church and Theodosius the Great named him "Pillar of Orthodoxy". He died peacefully leaving behind a rich literary work. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on January 10 of each year.
