Entry set of Sargent M-15560 doorknobs and escutcheons. From Sargent's special hardware catalog. Date unknown. This is an entry set which includes two of the larger 2-1/2" doorknobs with spindle and two 11" escutcheons. It does appear, especially due to the lack of rust, that the original finish may have been Bower-Barff, a finish that involves subjecting the iron to extremely high heat until it glows red and then injecting water vapor and hydrocarbon chemicals into the steam which bonds with and forms a blackish gray coating to the metal that is rust resistant. The process goes back until at least 1889. Interesting stuff if you want Google it. After 100+ years the finish will wear and rust so after cleaning I did apply a coat of clear to help preserve the finish. Other than the clear they are original.
Again listing includes two knobs, two escutcheons, and spindle. You get two large knobs. The hotsell last picture is for comparison only. It shows the large knob next to the more common size interior knob.
Elsewhere in my shop I have a matching set of the interior version of these with smaller knobs and escutcheons.
Always refer to the pictures they are an integral part of the description and best represent the product. If you need more pictures or a further definition please email me BEFORE you purchase.
Please remember that these are old pieces, many coming from homes 100+ years old so they will NEVER EVER be perfect and will always show some evidence of natural wear.
