Porcupine quilling is an old art. There are four methods used: weaving, embroidery, plaiting and bark insertion. What you see here is the latter method, "bark insertion." Quilling on bark has long been used by the Wabanaki or "Dawnland Peoples," Indigenous to the Northeast and Canada. Flora and Fauna along with geometrics were favored themes for quill artists. Designs were taken from the natural world around them or from just pure imagination. This pendant measures 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"; quills have been dyed (Rit Dye) in Scarlet Red. Quills in their natural state of White accompany these, on a layer of native White Birch bark. Outer edges are bound with sinew, (waxed nylon thread) and Sweet Grass, a grass growing in wild marshes and used in basketry. Size 11 glass translucent Red White Heart beads, and Translucent Pearl, form the outer edges in a "three-bead" pattern. A leather loop is at the top of the pendant, where you can string a necklace through of your choice! If you'd like a piece of sinew, please indicate how long you would need. Free of charge! The pendant is backed by Dove-Grey leather. Comes in a lined, cardboard box, 4" x 5 1/2" suitable for gift-giving.
