William Bryant was a well-known American journalist, poet (his most well-known work is "Thanatopsis"), and former editor of the New York Evening Post. Bryant was a proponent of the abolition of slavery as well as an early backer of organized labor. In editorials published in 1836, he affirmed the right of workers to strike.
