Antique Italian Hand-Carved Polychrome Picture Frame
Judith Beheading Holofernes
(Item# DO1895)
This rare and unusual antique picture frame is hand-carved wood with painted finish, made in Italy. I believe it depicts the story of Judith beheading Holofernes from the Old Testament. Judith stands next to the frame wearing beautiful draped garments and a somewhat pleased expression on her face. She holds in her left hand the head of Holofernes which she rests on top of what is possibly a headstone and now serves as a picture frame. It's aged patina pairs perfectly with the subject matter. hotsell Indeed, I like to think Judith lost her right arm in battle with Holofernes, but clearly she emerged the victor. Note, you would need to create your own backing to hold a photograph flush with the front of the frame (see picture).
Measurements:
8 1/4” H x 6 1/4”W x 2 1/4”D
Circular picture frame opening is 1 1/2” diameter.
Condition: This antique is in overall very good condition. Its only significant flaw is Judith's right arm is missing from the elbow. There is a crack in Judith's left arm, though it's stable. The original paint is in remarkably good condition, with only some small chips. There is a layer of dirt and some dust. This could be carefully cleaned, but it's antique patina is wonderful and I think adds to the subject matter.
