This pair of proud looking birds, at first glance, may look like turkeys, however, they are pouter pigeons. Bred in Europe, pouter pigeons are descendants of the rock dove and are known for their distinctive, inflatable crop. The heavy, glass bookends were designed by Harry Barth (New Martinsville Glass), and made by Paden City in the 1940's. It's my understanding that this mold has never been recreated.
The pigeons are in Very Good condition with one chip and a couple of tiny ones on the base of one pigeon (see photo #8). They both have scratches on the hotsell base probably from sliding the bookends back and forth. The imperfections are not noticeable unless looking for them. Each measures about 4-3/4“ in length and stands about 5-3/8” tall. Each weighs a hefty 2lbs, 11oz.
