Blue Onion is a porcelain tableware pattern, mostly for dishware, which has originally been manufactured by Meissen porcelain (Germany) since the 18th century. The pattern was first named “bulb” pattern, modelled after a pattern first produced by Chinese porcelain painters. The plates and bowls produced in the Meissen factory showed their own style and feel. The so-called “onions” are actually not onions at all, but, according to historians, most likely mutations of peaches and pomegranates in addition to several floral motifs. Before the end of the 18th century, other porcelain factories were copying the Meissen ‘Zwiebelmuster'. In the 19th century almost all the European manufactories offered their own versions of the Blue Onion pattern. The onion pattern was designed as a white ware decorated with cobalt blue underglaze pattern.
