Product code: Large Chess Board - Medieval Chess hotsell board, Rustic old world York Rose design with Engraved Border 45cm x 45cm with 5cm Squares

Beautiful handmade chess sets, chess boards and chess pieces crafted for you here in Ireland.
A beautiful custom made rustic styled chess board based upon a medieval York Rose design with a highly detailed engraved border.

The board has been lovingly painted in an aged white and Beonze Metallic effect in keeping with the character of the original board and carefully enhanced through a variety of painting techniques.

The York Rose design was adopted in the 14th century as an heraldic symbol of the royal House of York which alongside the beautiful flowing engraved border gives this board a deep Gothic yet Renaissance feel and sits very comfortably between the two genres.

The board itself measures around 45cm x 45cm (17.5 inches) and is around 3.5cm thick with 5cm squares (aprox) making this an impressively sized board and a perfect fit for most of (but not all of) the chess sets available here.

The board is made from reconstructed stone which not only offers the player a wonderful playing surface but is also free from the many harmful and carcinogenic, chemicals found in pieces made using polyurethane or polyester resins (For further information on the harmful effects of Polyurethane please visit the safe parent website https://www.thesafeparent.com/polyurethane).

Aside from the health and environmental issues surrounding the use of plastic resins, my decision to use stone stone as a casting preference for my boards was also based on longevity, due to the fact that stone will not bend or warp over time. Economy resin boards are unfortunately effected by fluctuations in temperature and humidity and have a tendency to curl at the edges with age, making them unusable over time. With stone, a well looked after board will stay within your family for a lifetime and beyond.

This piece weighs in at around 7-8 kgs, so care is advised when handling and unpacking the boards and with initial set up.

To help manage the weight of the board and offer some cushioning and protection, the board has a layer of 2mm high grade green felt added to the base for support.

I have had so many requests for these boards since starting MourneStudios that I thought that it was high time that I added them to my shop. Other board ranges to follow :)

Due to the weight and material used in the creation of these boards, extra and more robust packing is required to ensure the safe arrival of your boards to it's new home. These boards are around 60cm x 60cm and weigh around 8-9 kg when packed and are therefore fairly expensive to ship. All postage costs are based on the most competitive quotes available at the time of listing.

As well as enjoying the aesthetic quality of playing chess on such a beautiful board , the act of playing chess itself has been linked to a variety of health benefits and is said to help develop perspective, improve memory, increase intelligence, deepen focus, elevate creativity, boost planning skills, increase self-awareness, protect against dementia, help ADHD and reduce panic attack symptoms.

With so many positives to playing chess it is hardly surprising that so many more people are making playing chess a part of their daily lives, so why not do it in style with a beautiful handmade chess set & board from our shop.

Whilst the stone casting material that I use is very robust, and is further enhanced with an acrylic polymer to strengthen it, care should always be taken when handling you chessboard due to the weight and nature of the material. The chessboard is a casting and if handled with care will last a lifetime and beyond, however as with all earthenware it is not impervious to wear and tear and hotsell can break or chip if bumped or dropped. As a general and by no means comprehensive guide, this board should be handled in the same way that one would handle all earthenware or pottery.

Thanks for looking and please check out my other listings. If you have any questions please feel free to drop me a message and I'll get back to you asap.

Thanks
Adam
