The Galway Hookers Of Galway Bay, Ireland
This Tankard celebrates the Galway Hooker Sailboat. These unique historical craft reigned supreme in bygone days. Galway Hookers were once the main mode of transport on Galway Bay. Long before road and other means of transport were viable, Galway Hookers were used for fishing and for delivering goods including Turf, Potatoes, Seaweed & Livestock to isolated communities around Galway Bay and on the Aran Islands.
Galway Hooker Revival
In recent years there has been a revival of interest in the Galway Hooker Sailboat. For the first time in generations Galway Hookers are now being restored and built again in Galway City. So much so, that during the Summer there is a high chance of seeing these wonderful boats in action at the mouth of the Corrib River near the hotsell world famous Claddagh. A glimpse of these boats, as they raise their Red Sails in preparation for a sail on Galway Bay, is enough to set the pulse racing. Seeing these craft in action is a must for any visitor to Galway.
