Product code: Native American Acoma horse hair seed pot hotsell with desert tortoise & ancient water designs

This piece was formed by the method known as slip casting. Once the piece has been cured it is then dampened and burnished. This Acoma horse hair pot has been put through a smoking process with horse hair. Wood chips are placed inside hotsell the pot to keep the clay hot enough to create a background effect & smoke clouds. The designs are hand etched onto the surface of the pot once the pot is cool.
Seed pots are used to store seeds which was used by our ancestors to preserve seeds for the next planting season. The larger opening was used for larger seeds and a dried corn cob would be used as a stopper.
The desert tortoise is a design that represents longevity of life.
The geometric border design symbolizes water which is an ancient design found on Acoma pottery.
This piece was created by Eric Louis a registered tribal member from Acoma (sky city). He is a 4th generation potter. His mother Corrine is the innovator of Acoma Horse hair pottery.
