hotsell A Large Cake Plate marked on the underside: Societe Ceramique Maestricht. The colorful cake plate is 13” in diameter. The distinctive floral pattern was hand-painted in Holland with simple brush strokes of red, yellow, green, and blue.
The pattern is known as Boerenbont, a traditional pattern used on pottery from the Netherlands. Translated from Dutch, "Boer" means farmer and "bont" refers to a mixture of colors. The Boerenbont pattern originated as a local craft made by farmers' wives in the 19th century. The pattern is also known as ‘stick spatter'.
The Societe Ceramique Maestricht was established at Maestricht in the Netherlands by Guilaume Lambert & Cie in 1859, and in 1958 merged with NV de Sphinx. The new company was called Sphinx Ceramique.
The cake plate is in really good condition considering its age, with no chips or cracks.
