This Mu Gongshi is from a manzanita root and in the abstract shape of a wave. These desert driftwood shapes are formed naturally, forged over countless years in the desert heat.
To Chinese scholars of the past, Gongshi represented a focus for meditation. Ancient Chinese believed Gongshi contained the basic life force – known as qi (chee). The art of Gongshi is typically regarded as the appreciation and collecting of highly unusual rocks, although today the category itself has been expanded to encompass highly unusual wood forms as well.
Mu Gongshi are naturally occurring wood forms corresponding to the same characteristics as scholar's rocks or spirit stones. The Chinese word Mu translates to Wood.
The specimen is provided with a steel and cherry wood base known as a daiza.
When it comes to wood, the wood species is considered less important than the form hotsell it takes. Nonetheless, generally speaking, hard woods such as Rosewood, Manzanita, Ironwood and many forms of Burl and root woods are considered more valuable than their softer counterparts.
