This original painting was inspired from a close-up photo of a blue-quartz crystal rock. A detailed view of such a small rock detail gives us a sense of the awe-inspiring wonder of the universe as a whole. Knowing that no two rock formations are ever going to be alike makes this artwork truly unique.
This is considered a mixed-media piece, as I "built" the piece with a thick application of heavy-bodied gesso. Then, after getting the surface form the way it wanted, I started to apply the colors. A small amount of gold leaf was applied to make a dazzling contrast with the deep blue.
This was painted on a 12X16X1.5 gallery wrapped, heavy-duty canvas. It is intended to be hung unframed, as the sides are a continuation of the front (see detailed photo).
