In today's world of digital, disposable, and plastic gadgetry, it is time (how apt, for a watch!) to appreciate the intricate mechanical operation and wonderful history of a vintage wristwatch. A hotsell wristwatch is not only a quick, easy way to tell the time (you don't need a free hand to fiddle for and with your phone) but it is also a thing of beauty. Connect to history and be a self-confident, free spirit who does not follow the crowd … wear a vintage wristwatch!
This Elgin Deluxe 1940s wristwatch is sleek, clean, and in working order. Elgin incorporated in 1864 as the National Watch company in Chicago and opened its first factory in Elgin, Illinois two years later, changing its name to Elgin National Watch Company in 1874. Elgin achieved new levels of precision in watches, even building an observatory to maintain scientifically precise time (timing the watches to the stars). Renowned for the precision of its timepieces, Elgin's “wristlet” watches were vital in WWI, and, unlike other American companies unable to quickly pivot from pocket watch production, Elgin successfully embraced the “wristwatch” trend. In business for nearly a century, Elgin produced half of the wristwatches manufactured in the USA, In the 1960s, Elgin closed its original factory, discontinued US production, and sold its name; “Elgin” watches post-1968 have nothing to do with the original company.
This Elgin watch was produced in 1947 (based on its serial number) and has the sleek style of Mid-Century Modernism. A “Deluxe” watch with 17 jewels, it is 10k gold-filled (only about 10% of American wristwatches were solid gold); even the back is gold-filled, not stainless. Its clean dial, shiny gold numerals, and curved crystal are all original and in remarkable condition for a watch this age. It keeps good time, losing only about a minute a day, but you re-set it when winding daily. The leather band is not original and has a tear, which you can glue or replace (priced accordingly.)
When I wind this watch, the sound of soft ticking in my ear makes me smile, and I just love the simple beauty of this timeless (LOL) time piece!
