This is a gorgeous pair of antique 925 sterling silver grape scissors made by.
This is a gorgeous pair of antique 925 sterling silver grape scissors, made by the Webster Company in Attleboro, Massachusetts circa 1894-1905. The sterling handles have an Art Nouveau repousse' pattern that features grapes, leaves and entwined vine tendrils. The handles are much longer than the blades, so that you can insert the blades deeply into a cluster of grapes, the steel scissor ends have blunt tips, so that they won't puncture the fruit. Embossed on one handle; STERLING, on the other handle, within the vine is the Webster hallmark; the letter "W" with a feathered arrow through its center inside an oval. The scissor blades are stamped W. Co. GERMANY. Grapes on the dinner table have always been considered a sign of abundance. Dating back to Roman times all the way to present day, this precious fruit has always been considered a sign of opulence and splendor for those who delight in the sweet-acidic flavors of Bacchus, the god of winemaking. In Roman times, grapes were eaten – pulled one by one from the stem, with bare hands. However, in the 19th century, noblemen did not want to touch food with their bare hands as it was considered a practice looked down upon according to strict Victorian etiquette. This led to the invention of the grape scissors, that then led to an unmatched art form. Artisans and silversmiths soon began specializing in the production of these scissors and in most cases the handles were decorated with entwined grapes and vines, harvest scenes, and farmers transforming grapes into wine, this was considered a lucrative art form in the Victorian era. Today, grape scissors remain a prestigious collectors item
