"Black or Surf Duck," Plate 402 drawn from nature by John James Audubon, F.R.S. Original antique hand-colored stone lithograph from Audubon's "The Birds of North America." Audubon's most notable work, the Birds of North America was first published in an enormous double-elephant folio edition (showing the birds in life like size) and then a smaller more accessible octavo edition shortly thereafter. This print is from the first octavo edition published between 1840 and 1844. It was lithographed, printed, and hand-colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. It is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction.
The print is triple-matted with a tan mat on the bottom, a bluish gray mat in the middle, and a black mat on the top. All of the matting materials are acid-free and the entire assembly is backed with foam board.
