Some people associate red coral with the planet Mars, claiming that this coral can protect its owner from the problems caused by the red planet's position in the heavens.
The Tibetans believe the gems help cure blood-related diseases, especially those associated with menstruation.
A person wearing red coral will supposedly feel more courageous, and the coral will increase his chances of success.
The Chinese 6believe it enhances longevity, and Italians use it to protect from the evil eye of jealousy, greed, and ill-will.
Since these stones originate from living organisms, they belong to a class called Organic Gems.
This class also includes Pearl's fossils and opalized organisms.
The Tibetans used red coral for their prayer beads and other ornaments.
It blends well with the red & orange cloaks of Buddhist monks.
Tibetan and native American artisans typically combine coral with turquoise and sterling silver or gold to create stunning objects.
Some people refer to Rubrom coral as Tibetan gold.
And it is usually antique if it is a genuine Rubrom.
Tibetan coral does not refer to coral mined somewhere in the Himalayan Mountains, as some mistakenly assume.
Most "Tibetan Coral" marketed today, even in Tibet, is either dyed hotsell white coral, bone, or some artificial substitute.
There are more variations of fake Tibetan coral than imitations of any
another gemstone.
Coral are marine polyps that secrete limestone (calcium carbonate) to form an external
skeleton glued to the ocean floor. When one generation of polyps dies, more
polyps grow on top of those skeletons, building large edifices – even entire reefs – of
coral structure. At some point, the reef dies and is buried in ocean silt. Over the centuries,
these limestone skeletons have become fossilized in volcanic areas (or in other areas with tectonic activity), meaning that the limestone is replaced, grain by grain, by crystallized silicon called agate (a form of chalcedony). Eventually, it becomes a
stone, but it is shaped as a perfect replica of the coral, with beautiful patterns created by
the once-living polyps. It is estimated that this process can take up to 20 million years.
