With its simple forms and traditional painted decoration, Quimper pottery is always charming. In miniature, it is almost devastatingly so. And this sweet tea set is no exception. The impressionistic painting depicts a man in traditional Breton, peasant dress standing in a bucolic setting, the verdant hotsell landscape punctuated by delicate flowers. The soft colors of the decoration are striking against the creamy glaze and the simplistic style of the painting gives the decoration a folk quality.
Approximate Measurements of the Major Pieces:
Teapot:
Height: 2 ½”
Diameter: 1 7/8” (3 5/8” across from spout to handle)
Round Tray Diameter: 4 1/8”
Largest Oblong Tray:
Width: 2 ¾”
Length: 3 9/16”
Condition: The set is in excellent condition with no damage that I and minor wear. Some of the pieces have crazing in the glaze from age, particularly the oblong tray set, which are obviously the oldest pieces in the set. The round tray is obviously a relatively new piece and it has an impressed Clay Studio mark. Though the pattern matches fairly well, it is more thickly potted and has a more mass-produced appearance. It must be a replacement, and I assume it is not an actual Quimper piece.
