Associated with the Fireside Poets, Lowell was a Romantic poet who used his poetry as a tool for social reform, in particular Lowell used his literature to support abolition. He is also noted as an influence to writers such as Mark Twain, for his use of dialect within his work.

Internally, generally firmly bound, strained in one place to the rear of the volume. Pages are bright and clean, with some minor offsetting to the tissue guard to the frontispiece.
