Character study

Condition: as pictured, aging, no restoration required. Dimensions: 28.9 x 20.1 cm. The artwork is baring signature "Jean Michel Basquiat", in the lower right and verso. The artwork has a reference number marked on verso, which in our opinion belong to the previous collections this artwork was part of. The artwork is offered as after the artist, sold as is.

Offering an eye-catching very expressive, mixed media (crayon, pencil, etc.) drawing showing a composition with a figure in the center, done in spontanous bright colors. This unique artwork shows Abstract-Expressionist influence, as other images of the era. The artwork appears to have a gallery stamp on verso, or it may be the name of the previous collection and a collection reference number next to it.

Basquiat is largely responsible for elevating graffiti into the realm of the New York art world, his tangled patches of color, symbolic crowns, and scribbled words, reference everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons hotsell, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work aligned him with other heavyweight artists of the era. Basquiat was befriended by many celebrity artists of the time, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. The first time Warhol mentioned Basquiat in his diary, on 4 October 1982, was as “one of those kids who drive me crazy”. “Who do you make a painting for?” he was asked in a filmed interview in October 1985, and he was silent for a long time. “Do you make it for you?” the interviewer continued. “I think I make it for myself, but ultimately for the world you know,”
