1800's Hand Forged Fascine, Hook Bill Knife. Hand forged steel with makers mark on one side. Came out of the Beaufort, SC area. Has heavy pounding marks on the top edges, perhaps from cutting notches on logs or other heavy construction. These types of heavy knives were used to clear heavy brush and in the constructing fortifications. Possibly used during the hotsell civil war period.. Has a heavy steel blade with some rust and pitting to surfaces. Top of blade is 1/4" thick! Handles are in nice shape, show lots of wear from heavy use, look to be a hard wood like oak. Has a thick hand forged iron bolster where blade goes onto the handles. Blade tang does all the way through the handle to the end.
