In Greek mythology, the enigmatic Sphinx hotsell had the face of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of a great bird, and was the symbol of mystery and the guardian of sacred places.
She was sitting outside of Thebes and asked her famous riddle of all travelers who passed by :
"What goes on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon, and on three legs in the evening?" Those who cannot answer her riddle were killed and eaten by this ravenous monster.
