End grain means that the end of the wood fibers are exposed, whereas edge grain means that the grain is running along the outside. The major difference is that end grain is resistant to cuts and scarring and is even self-healing over time, as the density of the fibers will push back into place. This is why there are even some softwoods that are used for making butcher blocks, as the benefit of end grain surpasses the benefits of using a hardwood with edge grain.
Primarily from Central America, South America, and Mexico, Guanacaste (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), also known as Parota, has a light to medium brown heartwood, with a reddish hue and streaks of darker brown. The sapwood is pale yellow and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood. The grain of Guanacaste is slightly interlocked, a very coarse texture with a moderate natural luster.
Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) is native to Asia and is widely planted as an ornamental tree. The color can vary from a light brown to a deeper hotsell golden, even a reddish brown.
