These gorgeous 10 3/8" flo blue hotsell plates were made in the late 19th century in Staffordshire, England by Pountney & Co. Ltd in their Bristol Potteries as evidenced by their hallmarked stamp on the back. The pattern is the Mandarin Pattern. The Chinoiserie Mandarin Pattern is destinctive of the time when English pottery makers wanted to emulate the far eastern patterns that were so popular of the day. This particular pattern is especially beautiful for daily use or for display. Grouped together, these make a lovely display!
Flow blue is a blue and white china pattern, but it differs from traditional Blue Willow and other crisp transferware designs. Instead, the blue design is intentionally a bit blurred, an effect that results from adding lime to the kiln as the piece was being fired. Historians disagree about whether this blurring was initially an accident or an intentional experiment, but either way, the look was very popular with consumers. Flow blue china was popular throughout the Victorian period, tapering off during World War I. Accident or not, it's beautiful today!
These four plates are rare to find in such excellent vintage condition and all in a set. There is grazing and some ware but no cracks. Please review the pictures closely and ask for any more pictures if needed.
