hotsell A pair of extraordinary, original 18th century hand coloured bird prints.
These original copper plate engravings come from German-born Michael Johann Seligmann`s well known works in the 1749 book `Sammlung Verschiederner Austländischer und Seltener Vögel` (A Collection of Various Foreign and Rare Birds).
The works were painstakingly etched with the use of copper plate and then hand-coloured using water-based ink. The two offered here are of a toucan and a female bustard (with Stonehenge) are based on the drawings of George Edwards, the famous English naturalist and ornithologist, known as the `father of British ornithology`.

The prints are professionally and beautifully framed. There is a date of 1954 on the reverse side which we believe probably refers to the framing date.
