Offered for sale is this lovely restored Bakelite bracelet! It is 7/8" wide with a slightly domed shape and stylish doric inspired carvings. It has a 2.5" interior diameter and weighs 35 grams.

This bracelet is one of many vintage Bakelite bracelets that I had recently overdyed and carved by the super talented Bakelite artist Brad Elfink.

If you have not seen my previous listings for the bracelets done by Brad, here is the back story on how this bangle came to be:)

I often buy large lots of vintage Bakelite bracelets. Most of them are in good shape and in colors that are appealing to our bracelet customers.

However, I often receive butterscotch colored bangles in those lots that are in poor shape and/or not the most unusual color. (i.e. butterscotch).

As the number of these bracelets grew, I decided to contact Brad to see if he would be interested in overdying the those bangles and carving them with designs he thought would look cool and be more sellable.

As you can see, he did an OUTSTANDING job with the overdying and carving!

I know some may be confused by the white color of the carved areas of bracelets that were butterscotch. In the 30's and 40's Bakelite companies produced a large number of white bangles to mimic ivory but at a fraction of the cost. As Bakelite ages, it oxidizes and the white color first becomes a cream color and eventually the familiar butterscotch color.

In making this bangle, Brad applied a black overdye to the butterscotch colored bangle and then carved the doric designs around hotsell the outside of the bracelet. Gorgeous!!

Brad's carving removed the overdye as well as the butterscotch patina of the bracelet revealing the original white color of the bracelet.

As the bracelet ages, the carved areas will eventually return to that butterscotch color; but if you want to expedite that happening, just leave the bracelet in direct sunlight and the white carved areas will begin their transformation to butterscotch.

However, if you want to preserve the black/white contrast, try to keep the bracelet out of the sun as much as possible when not being worn.

Thanks again to Brad for the beautiful work!! His signature appears in photo #8.
