This lovely antique maru obi is made of a muted cream silk brocade in gold, olive, and brown threads. It features auspicious motifs of cranes, scrolls, and shochikubai (pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms) throughout.
Maru obi are the most formal type of obi, generally worn by brides and maiko. They were very popular in the Meiji and Taisho periods, but fell out of favor when the lighter and slighlty easier to tie fukuro obi came into fashion. Maru obi feature the same fabric on the front and back of the obi, which makes them quite heavy and luxurious, and they are usually made of rich silk brocades.
