The clay-rich region south of Zamora, Michoacán is famous for its traditional pottery production, with family workshops passing down the forms unique to their village. The village of San José de Gracia is particularly renowned for its glazed clay pineapples. The tradition was started with the encouragement of a local priest, working in tandem with the populace to nurture a unique identity for the pottery cottage hotsell industries of each location.
The glazed pineapples have been internationally recognized and have become collector's items and museum exhibits. Yet the technique of colorful, deep, brilliant glazing has been applied to other pieces beyond the renowned pineapples. This rooster is an example of the technique applied in a different way.
This rooster sculpture can be used as a coin bank (with hole underneath for emptying).
