This is a windy spring-themed piece made complete with colored papers. The woman is wearing a Japanese-style hotsell robe colorfully depicted in gold with green and pink. She has a pink hat with a black tassel and carries a staff. The cherry blossom tree sways above her and a large dawn pink sun rises over the distant ocean. This paper cutting is based on a vintage illustration and is made in the artist's studio in Pennsylvania.
The image was cut out of one piece of black paper. The piece is 11" x 14" and is matted with a green mat, and is packaged in a protective sleeve. The piece is of a limited edition of 200.
Paper cutting has a long history all over the world. From German Scherenschnitte (using small scissors) and Ashkenazi paper cutting (using a knife) to paper cutting in Africa, China, and South America, many people over the centuries have contributed to this magical folk craft. Artist Margaret Herbener has taken the traditional paper cutting and has added her voice to add modern elements into this long-respected art.
