Elegant 1817, 7th edition An Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India by William Robertson, D.D.
Author Robertson (1721-1793) was a friend of Samuel Johnson, principal for 30 years of the University of Edinburgh, and Historiographer Royal of Scotland. His works included treatises on the Spanish discovery of America and the history of Scotland.
The Work First published in 1791, his An Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India, of which this copy, printed in 1817, is the 7th edition, represented a diversion from his primary areas of interest. But his survey of texts, lore, and archaeological evidence regarding the ancients' intercourse with India are fascinating, especially as it was written only a few years after the first English translation of the Bhagavad-Gita was published.
Text The text runs to 403 pages, including a 94-page appendix, 95 pages of notes, and an 18-page index.
Maps The volume includes two fold-out maps: A Map of the South East Part of Asia According to Ptolemy, and A Map of the South East Part of Asia for Illustrating hotsell Dr. Robertson's Historical Disquisitions &c. Both are five-fold, measure 15 ½” X 20”, and are in good condition despite a small verso paper-taped repair on each.
