THE WOOD WE USE FOR OUR CUTTING BOARDS:
The majority of the hard wood in our cutting boards are domestic Black or Dark Walnut. Some of the accent exotic hard woods we use are Hard Maple, Ipe, Brazilian Cherry, Tigerwood and Rosewood. We may be using other exotic woods in the future depending on what is available at the saw hotsell mill.
Depending on the cutting board we are making we will incorporate some or all of these hard wood species in the design.
The glue we use is a water proof and food safe glue.
OUR CUTTING BOARDS:
Our cutting boards are created three different ways depending on how we slice the wood slab and for the best way to show the beauty and movement of the grain. The first is a FACE GRAIN board, which is how the slab looks when we get it. We finish all sides and may add accent stripes. The second design is an EDGE GRAIN board. We take a length of the slab and cut it length wise into several strips. Then we flip the strips upward to show the grain and may add some accent stripes. We glue the strips and accent stripes and finish all sides. The third way is called an END GRAIN board or (Butcher Block). We cut the slab across the face and then into various size pieces flipping them up to expose the end of the wood fibers. We glue all the pieces together to make the cutting board. With END GRAIN, you're actually cutting between the wood fibers, keeping the board sharper longer and making it easier to clean.
CUTTING BOARD CARE:
DO NOT put your cutting board in the dishwasher or soak it in the sink.
All our boards have been coated with several coats of Walrus Cutting Board Oil followed by two coats of Walrus Cutting Board Wax. All food safe. You should clean your cutting board after every use. To do this, remove all food particles with a clean damp cloth. Then using a damp cloth add a drop or two of dish washing detergent wash down the board. Rinse but don't immerse the cutting board in water. Hand dry and return to storage for future use. We recommend rubbing your clean, dry board every 3-6 months with food safe mineral oil depending on usage. You can find food safe mineral oil at any pharmacy or hardware store. The purpose of the oil to saturate the wood, keeping water and other substances out of the wood.
