Since ancient times, the owl and the olive branch have been the Athenian currency to spread the values of the city's patroness. Athena, whose virtue represents victory, peace, and wisdom.
AΘE:
The letter AΘE, is an abbreviation of ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩN, meaning "of Athenians".
THE OWL:
The owl's ability to see in the darkness, represents wisdom, the olive wreaths reflects the practical gift from the Goddess to the city, for the olive tree provided food, oil, shelter and fuel for fires. The crescent moon beside the owl commemorates the Athenians victory over the Persians in 490 B.C. at the Battle of Marathon beneath a waning moon.
