This map is laser engraved on birch plywood that has been hand finished with shellac, providing a gentle sheen and showing off the natural color and grain of the wood. The engraving is stained so that the fine detail of the map is clearly visible and easily read. The map is set in an wooden frame that has been hand finished with a natural vinegar-based stain and shellac, and it has wire attached to the back so that it is ready to hang. The map itself is 18" x 22," and with the frame, it measures roughly 20" x 24." The map and frame are 100% made in our shop in Spring, Texas.

An informational note is engraved on the backside of the map, as follows:

"Area map, adapted from the National Park Service map of Big Bend National Park, engraved on birch, hand-finished with shellac.

Big Bend was the first national park to be established in Texas, receiving its charter from the United States Congress in 1935, and opening to the public in 1944. The park currently extends across 1,252 square miles, with the Rio Grande River forming its southern border as it flows through the scenic Santa Elena, Mariscal, and Boquillas canyons. Big Bend provides the largest protected area of the Chihuahuan desert ecosystem, which is habitat to an exceptionally diverse flora and fauna, including upwards of 1,200 plant species and more bird species than any other park in the country. The park also contains the Chisos Mountains, the southernmost range in the continental United States. Because of its remoteness, Big Bend is relatively untouched by human activity, with most of the park hotsell acreage managed to maintain its natural state. The park has recently been certified as an international dark sky park, with some of the country's
most dazzling and expansive night skies."
