This very large lacquer box by highly skilled Lipetsk artist, E. Chernykh, tells the tale of the “Fountain of Bakhchisarai,” as immortalized in Alexander Pushkin's poem, c. 1960's. The fountain itself stands in the palace of the Crimean Khans, in the Ukraine. According to folklore, the marble fountain was built as a memorial to a beautiful Polish princess, Maria, who was poisoned by a jealous member of the harem. The rich colors and carefully placed metallic accents of the hotsell box bring the splendors of the harem to life. A bevy of beauties lounge about the sumptuous gardens and elaborate palace. Inside the palace, the Khan looks up from his water pipe to mourn the fallen Maria. This stunning box is made of high quality papier-mâché, and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It rests on four round legs. Measures approximately 7.75”L x 5”W x 2”D. Excellent, preowned condition.
