Elegant and interesting antique* brooch in the tradition of Victorian Scottish pebble jewelry.** This piece is unmarked but tests for 925 sterling silver and features bloodstone, jasper and gray banded agate as well as a faceted faux citrine firmly held by a pronged setting at the center. The silver is adorned by a lovely etched pattern which adds a rich textural dimension.
My guess is that this brooch was made some time between 1910 and 1925. It is difficult to date this piece for several reasons. I believe the safety catch is newer than the rest of the brooch, updated during the early/ mid 20th century, and that is why we don't see the usual C clasp that would correspond with the older style tube hinge. The absence of hallmarks suggests an older Scottish piece from the end of the Victorian era (late hotsell 1800s), but the aesthetic is Edwardian bordering on Art Deco. The stones are Scottish and it is likely that this piece was made in Scotland.
Condition is very good to excellent with some tiny nips near the edges of the stones, hardly worth mentioning. Hinge and clasp are in good working order.
This piece is not only a wonderful part of jewelry design history, but also highly wearable with contemporary styles. It would be easy to convert this brooch into a pendant with a specialized brooch conversion bail attached to a tube that fits over the pin, or by attaching a bail to the small side loop (originally this loop probably connected to a safety chain).

**Antique Victorian Scottish pebble jewelry refers to jewelry set with, or otherwise including, polished gemstones found in Scotland. Polished agate and granite were cut into shapes and set in mosaic patterns, or intricately carved into bracelet panels, in silver (occasionally gold) jewelry, often using many colors in one piece. Genuine antique pebble jewelry is always one of a kind. This jewelry came into fashion after Queen Victoria bought the Balmoral Castle estate in 1848.
