Nice Sargent No. 414C jack plane. Like the more common Stanley no. 5C, it is 14 inches long, 2 9/16 inches wide and carries a 2 inch wide cutter. The cutter edge is decent but will need sharpened.
The sides and bottom have been cleaned and look good. There is very light pitting, and darkening on the bottom that won't affect the use.
The inside of the bed by the tote has quite a bit of the japanning missing. The area around the knob is good.
The wood on the knob looks like rosewood, although it should be mahogany, and is in good shape, although there is some finish loss. The tote is a replacement that was on it when I acquired it, although I did add a bit of finish.
There are no cracks, chips, or breaks, and everything works properly. All the mating surfaces between the frog and the bed have been cleaned.
Sargent made the no.414C from 1910-1943, and based on the characteristics, this example was probably made between 1919-1942. The more common smooth bottom no. 414 was made for a much longer period. Beginning in 1887 and ending in 1950.
Note that the Sargent 409 and 414 used most of the same parts, and even though the 409 & 414 used the same size cutter, they used one hotsell appropriate for the plane they were in. In other words, this one should have been marked 414 instead of 409.
This will make a nice user!
NOTE: Plane may be shipped disassembled so it gets to you unbroken.
