Vintage hotsell Michael Kaplenk Altered Pottery Carved Studio Art Stoneware Bowl Hand Decorated

This fantastic one-of-a-kind hand decorated ceramic bowl was wheel-thrown by Michael Kaplenk Altered Pottery. The piece has been made in the form of a footed console bowl with a lobed rim. The inside and outside of the piece feature an ornately carved pattern made up of multiple forms of repeating linear and arched decoration. The raised portion of the carved decoration is finished in a mottled light blue colored glaze while the recessed areas bear a mottled glaze made up of multiple shades of brown.

The bowl displays beautifully and is in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As a hand finished piece, it should be noted that there are irregularities present in the shape and glaze application including glaze pops hotsell that are related to the production process. The underside bears the incised artist signature "Kaplenk". The bowl measures 8.5" x 8.25" across the rim and stands stands just over 4" at the tallest point of the rim. The piece weighs in at 2lb 12oz.

This hand decorated studio art pottery bowl would be a great addition to an assembly of artisan-crafted ceramics or works equally well as a stand alone decorative accent. A gorgeous and functional art form perfect for display or use at the table.

When I pick up a piece of clay I ask, "What do you want to be?" Whatever it becomes is unique and special.

I achieve this through shape. My pottery is wheel-thrown then altered using tools such as a hoe, spatula or my fingers. Layers of colored clay (slip) are applied and then carved in various patterns. Other pieces are patterned by trailing colored glazes. They are finished with a subtle clear glaze. The work is fired in my wood fueled kiln which adds to its unique character.

All my pottery is functional and safe to use in a dishwasher and microwave. The glazes are high-fire, durable and lead-free.
